Early in his career in Australia Rod experienced the rush associated with helping design an amazingly successful ad. A newspaper retail ad he worked on attracted so many buyers to a store, it created gridlock in downtown Melbourne, and a passion for results-driven-design in Rod.
.....At J. Walter Thompson in Melbourne, Rod and agency colleagues convinced a national advertiser to integrate collateral more closely with the advertising. What now seems an obvious strategy was something of a new one for large international agencies at that time. Improved results helped change that. He continued being able to use this approach as an art director at Lawrence Wolf Inc. Buffalo, N.Y. with clients that included Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, & leading US international pharmaceutical companies. Rod helped open the Toronto office of Wolf, as a creative director. Accounts like: Clairtone, Sunbeam, Canon, Volkswagen, & Esso.
.....In the early 1970s Rod served on the Art Directors Club of Toronto Board. A great learning experience.
.....In his half a century with Nash+Nash, Rod and Liz continued to produce work that showed how well their integrated marketing communications strategies worked. And in time they became known as leaders in building positive community spirit within large & small corporations & also not-for-profit organizations.
.....In 1996 Rod used his communications skills to help get an act through the Ontario Legislature forming The Association of Registered Graphic Designers, essentially the first such act for graphic designers anywhere (certainly in North America). As a founder of RGD he was a V.P. on the first Board of Directors. He remained an active advisor to this board until 2020. Rod represented Graphic Designers for a decade on the Design Industry Advisory Committee (DIAC). Rod is a Past President of the RGD Examination Board (Now the Certification Committee) where he remained through its various iterations until 2020. Rod is currently a Member of the RGD Membership Committee. |
