A Sign from Early 1960s...
In the early 1960s, right out of art school (RMIT Melbourne) Rod worked in the art department of a successful Advertising agency, Handbury, in downtown Melbourne. Their clients were retail chains who owned grocery stores, shoe stores, clothing and jewellery stores etc. Also they branded products sold in these stores. If I remember correctly the kid in the photograph below was our office boy. He was a bright kid of about 15. Handbury used him as the photo icon for the newly named brand: Billy Bunter Pies. At Handbury Rod learned how we did not always have to use professional models. There were times Liz and Rod used the people around them in the ads they did too.
At Handbury Rod worked with a really smart writer, a year younger than him. Rod learned a lot from him. His name was Peter Carey.
Yes the Booker Prize Award winning novelist.
