Early 1970s VW ad
We had fun with this ad that appeared in Vancouver newspapers. Walt Disney had just released "The Love Bug." So VW held a contest for people to create their own Love Bug. The prize was a Volkswagen. So we all had fun painting this car that Volkswagen provided and photographing it for the ad. See additional info below. |

VW had a style developed by Helmut Krone at Doyle Dane in NY. But we decided to use tighter headline type. Herb Lubalin, NY graphic designer, influenced Rod to this, starting with ads Rod had done in Australia. It was new to Canadian advertising at the time. Some recent research had shown ads with tighter type tended to stand out better in magazines and newspapers. VW Canada management said go for it. Rod often used Letraset for headings to make sure he got the type letter spaced the way he wanted it ... and meet newspaper deadlines :)
