1963 Granny Davis Bread (Melbourne Australia)
Before being hired by J. Walter Thompson - right out of art school (RMIT Melbourne, Australia) Rod worked in the art department of mid sized retail ad agency, Handbury, in downtown Melbourne. They appreciated his hand lettering & product rendering (illustration) skills. Their clients were retail chains who owned grocery stores, shoe stores, clothing and jewellery stores etc. Handbury also created iconic new brands. A couple while Rod worked there e.g. Billy Bunter Pies.
Ask any one who lived in Melbourne in the 60s if they remember the radio ad jingle, "There is nothing like the old fashioned flavour of Granny Davis Bread," and I am sure they will sing this Handbury jingle. As well as ads etc, Rod worked assembling the artwork on both of these brands, including a number of Granny Davis bread packages.

Agency: Handbury Advertising
One advantage of working in a retail advertising agency at that time was that Rod got first-hand feedback (through sales statistics, sometimes within days) on what concepts, copy and design - worked - and what did not work.
